THE CHALLENGE

This year, as part of the Forum, we are continuting to host The Kevin Xu Innovation Challenge and have invited members of the Rhodes and Equitech Futures communities to tackle the following question and put forward potential solutions:

How might we build AI systems that increase human agency and dignity - not by automating away choice, but by amplifying it?

MEET THE JUDGES AND FINALISTS

Panel of Judges

Abundance isn’t just about more stuff, it’s about more meaningful time, more trusted knowledge, more generative relationships. The Challenge has welcomed ideas that help people make decisions with greater context, pursue goals with greater clarity, and interact with systems that respect their autonomy and values.
Our judges will be distributing the prize money under two categories:

  • Public Interest Track - for solutions aimed at equitable social benefit, governance, education, sustainability, or community empowerment
  • Commercial Track - for market-driven solutions that demonstrate both business potential and social responsibility

Open Door

Across the U.S., people experiencing homelessness face fragmented access to healthcare, housing, and social services - systems that are life-saving but often inaccessible because of eligibility barriers, waitlists, and lack of visibility. OpenDoor is an AI-driven platform that reimagines how frontline service providers and vulnerable individuals connect to essential support.Early data from our user testing shows faster referrals for Medicaid, mental health care, and substance use treatment - areas that directly affect survival and long-term recovery. OpenDoor was built with caseworkers and advocacy groups, ensuring AI augments human relationships rather than replacing them.Instead of relying on outdated rulesets, OpenDoor uses large language models fine-tuned to continuously ingest state and municipal eligibility laws, program updates, and funding changes. This creates a living system of guidance, one that translates complexity into clarity across multiple languages and formats. For foster youth, LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, survivors of domestic violence, and low-income families, OpenDoor transforms a stigmatizing, confusing process into a trusted pathway to health and housing.

Gensight AI

GenSight AI is dedicated to closing the last-mile gap in genomic medicine—the critical point where families finally receive a genetic report, but are left confused and anxious instead of informed and empowered. Born out of a decade of frontline experience through Wonder Sir, China’s leading rare disease innovation hub, our team has witnessed firsthand how unclear genetic interpretation delays treatments and prolongs uncertainty. GenSight AI bridges this gap with an expert-driven, compassionate AI partner that translates complex genomic data into clarity, actionable guidance, and hope for patients and families.

CivicHelper

We aim to solve the inequities of vital document access (birth certificates, social security cards, etc.) for low-income, unhoused, and immigrant communities by streamlining document application processes for social service workers and community members.

Koan

Koan is a thinking-focused AI Learning Management System (LMS). We partner with institutions to solve a growing crisis; AI over-reliance eroding students' ability to think critically. The Koan platform disincentivizes generative AI spoonfeeding through an integrated, interactive workhub and a socratic in-house AI Teaching Assistant. Koan is an institution's one-stop solution, managing the core academic workflow from AI-powered evaluations and grading to assignment generation. Koan is the partner you need to embrace AI wisely, empower your educators, and cultivate a new generation of capable, genuine thinkers.

Vocam

Vocam revolutionizes vocabulary acquisition by transforming everyday environments into interactive language classrooms. Using AI object detection technology powered by Google Vision API, the mobile app enables learners to point their camera at any object and instantly receive translations, pronunciations, and contextual usage in over 40 languages.Designed with neurodivergent learners in mind, including those with ADHD, autism, and dyslexia, Vocam leverages visual-spatial learning strengths rather than traditional text-based methods. The app addresses the critical gap where 15-20% of the global population struggles with conventional language learning approaches that rely heavily on phonological processing and abstract memorization. The camera-based interface offers immediate visual and contextual associations, enabling users to develop practical, real-world vocabulary through their daily surroundings. By scanning objects in their environment—from kitchen items to street signs—learners create meaningful neural connections between visual stimuli and foreign language vocabulary.Vocam transforms language learning from an abstract classroom exercise into an engaging, anxiety-free exploration of the world, making vocabulary acquisition accessible for millions who have been underserved by traditional educational methods.

Bureaucrazy

Bureaucrazy is a web-based platform that helps Nepali citizens navigate complex government paperwork without paying expensive consultants. Built by six high school graduates, the platform provides step-by-step AI guidance for NOC (No Objection Certificate) and LOE (Letter of Equivalence) applications through a simple chatbot, document templates, and legal information database. We're also preparing for Nepal's March 2026 elections by adding voter registration guidance and civic education content, making Bureaucrazy a complete citizen empowerment platform. Our users include college students, working professionals, and Non-Resident Nepalis helping family members back home.Bureaucrazy addresses a critical pain point in Nepal's bureaucratic system where citizens traditionally depend on expensive middlemen who charge for services that should be accessible to everyoneWhat makes Bureaucrazy unique is our deep understanding of the problem from lived experience. As recent high school graduates, our team has personally struggled with these bureaucratic barriers when applying for higher education abroad. We've combined this firsthand empathy with technical skills in AI/ML development and connections through parliamentary networks and media to create a solution that truly serves citizens.
