An evening of thoughtful conversations for Scholars who are curious about creating a professional future in Africa after their time in Oxford.

Leaving Oxford often brings exciting possibilities alongside complex questions, including whether, when, or how to return to Africa. This in-person event, held in collaboration between the Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx) and the Rhodes Trust's Early Careers Launchpad (ECL), offers a warm, peer-centred space to explore those decisions openly and honestly.

The evening will begin with "What We Don’t Post on LinkedIn", a candid conversation between a Rhodes Scholar in Residence and an AfOx Scholar and a member of the Rhodes and AfOx alumni communities. Together, they will reflect not only on what has worked, but also on what felt uncertain, non-linear, or slower than expected as they navigated the decision on whether to build their futures in Africa.

Attendees will be invited to engage directly with the panellists, bringing their questions, reflections, and perspectives into an open and generous conversation shaped by shared curiosity and lived experience.

The session will then move into an interactive workshop on building careers across continents; embracing the reality of “squiggly” paths and creating space to reflect on personal priorities, constraints, and next steps.

The event will end with an opportunity to network with other attendees and the speakers. We warmly encourage you to share your experiences, learn from each other, and build new connections.

We will also be joined by the Refugee-Led Research Hub (RLRH) for the duration of the event, a global initiative based at the University of Oxford, supporting individuals with lived experience of forced displacement.
